I love my parents. I've been having some concerns about communicating with them about life issues. I want a very open communications channel with them: I want to be able to share what is going on in my life. The only two alternatives I see are being quite closed about what is going on and only sharing what I think will be non-problematic. I've decided that I'm personally not interested in the only sharing non-problematic stuff approach.
Last night, I set down with them and explained my concerns. It turns out that most of my concerns ended up being stupid misunderstandings. We worked through the one real issue I had and then discussed what was going on in my life. It was great to be able to share what's going on with my parents as I would friends. I've mostly been able to do that previously but had not been able to do so for a while.
Sadly I could not sleep last night very well. Goal for today is to get to the airport as it opens and try to go standby on an earlier flight.

Date: 2005-07-18 06:44 pm (UTC)It makes me a bit sad when I have friends who have large chunks of their lives they feel compelled to hide from their parents.
Also, it was good seeing you while you were around. Maybe next time you are in town we can hang out some more.

Date: 2005-07-19 12:53 am (UTC)I always get annoyed when I say I'm doing something with my parents and people start giving me sympathies and stuff. I'm sorry they have bad relationships with their parents, but I have a good one with mine... not because I'm just lucky, but because I and they sat down and had the kind of conversations you had...
